Rationale

A class excursion involves much paperwork and careful planning. A teacher who makes the effort to engage her/his students by taking them on a field trip shows real commitment to student learning.

The following plan for a class excursion to the local generating station demonstrates many of the key elements of this standard of practice. It allows the teacher to model “curiosity, enthusiasm and joy of learning”. It encourages students to be be active learners and citizens and students can see how curriculum links to everyday life.

This particular excursion helps students develop an appreciation of their community as the river and water falls has such historical, social, and economic relevance. It also encourages the students to consider their impact on the environment and explore alternate forms of energy, which reinforces their role as citizens.

This course has helped me understand the developmental stages of the junior learner so that I can use appropriate teaching strategies. I have also included some of these strategies here to show my commitment to student learning.
